The Haltija

georgie 2
Is a fairy spirit or guardian of a place such as a glen of trees, water, the grave yard, villages, and homesteads. There are also Haltija’s which guards humans, by discreetly following them around to keep them safe.

The Haltija is a very close friend of Raisie and would like to invite you on September 8th  to “Reflections on the River,” an exhibition of works by local artists which includes Anastasia Traina.  The Milne Library in Williamstown will host the show where Raisie will be on display till Sept. 3oth 2016!

Ruby’s Metamorphosis

IMG_6897I have had the great privilege to be able to photograph the magical McDonald Sisters for the last five years…  and when I look over the photographs we have taken (a mere fraction of which I have posted) their metamorphosis into womanhood has been nothing short of astonishingly miraculous…  breathtaking, really.  And perhaps, when I began this project I did not truly understand the scope, or how tremendously moving it would be for me, the grandness of witnessing each of these tender buds, blossom into such beautifully unique flowers.  For in this photograph of Ruby, the youngest, it has become crystal clear to me that she is shedding her little red childhood cloak and bravely moving forward into the forest of the future and what ever may come her way… So I just want to humbly say, thank you for all the light and ticklish wonderment you have shared with me.  No, this is not the end, but nearly, and I wanted to leave you with my one wish for all of you, expressed so wondrously by  Maya Angelou, in  a letter she wrote to her daughter ~

“I am convinced that most people do not grow up…We marry and dare to have children and call that growing up. I think what we do is mostly grow old. We carry accumulation of years in our bodies, and on our faces, but generally our real selves, the children inside, are innocent and shy as magnolias.”

With much love and muchiness, I thank you!

oxox,

Ana

Rose’s Bloom

rubs

“The splendor of the rose and the whiteness of the lily do not rob the little violet of it’s scent nor the daisy of its simple charm. If every tiny flower wanted to be a rose, spring would lose its loveliness.”

The Damselfly

IMG_6268 copyAnd so begins my fifth year of photographing the enchanted and most endearing little women of the McDonald family… I chose to start this year with the Damselfly as it represents the magical sense of self that comes when we enter womanhood… I also love the lore, they are of the family that the dragonfly belongs to, Odonata, which are believed to have been related to the Damselflies and the myth that the they were once Dragons.

The Banshees of the Green River

Although known in several lands, the banshee (fairy women) was most widely reported in Massachusetts. The banshee's wail, predicting a coming death, recalls the ancient practice of wild screaming (keening) whereby women mourned the loss of a loved one. Occasionally the banshee were seen, swathed in somber gray and unearthly white. They can either be young women or old hags. However, their appearance are less notable than their voices, which ring with sorrow as they bemoan the dead. Fairy Portrait by Anastasia Traina~ 2014~

The Enchanted Moura

The mouras encantadas are shapeshifters and there are a number of legends, and versions of the same legend, as a result of centuries of oral tradition.
