Ruby’s Metamorphosis

IMG_6897I have had the great privilege to be able to photograph the magical McDonald Sisters for the last five years…  and when I look over the photographs we have taken (a mere fraction of which I have posted) their metamorphosis into womanhood has been nothing short of astonishingly miraculous…  breathtaking, really.  And perhaps, when I began this project I did not truly understand the scope, or how tremendously moving it would be for me, the grandness of witnessing each of these tender buds, blossom into such beautifully unique flowers.  For in this photograph of Ruby, the youngest, it has become crystal clear to me that she is shedding her little red childhood cloak and bravely moving forward into the forest of the future and what ever may come her way… So I just want to humbly say, thank you for all the light and ticklish wonderment you have shared with me.  No, this is not the end, but nearly, and I wanted to leave you with my one wish for all of you, expressed so wondrously by  Maya Angelou, in  a letter she wrote to her daughter ~

“I am convinced that most people do not grow up…We marry and dare to have children and call that growing up. I think what we do is mostly grow old. We carry accumulation of years in our bodies, and on our faces, but generally our real selves, the children inside, are innocent and shy as magnolias.”

With much love and muchiness, I thank you!

oxox,

Vila

tully 2

A woodland spirit who lives in the wilderness and sometimes in the clouds. She usually appear as a beautiful maiden, naked or dressed in a sparkling green skirts of leaves…

Vila’s voice is  beautiful as the rest of her, she can form large gusts of winds that can lift houses into the air. She has healing and prophetic powers and she is sometimes willing to help human beings. At other times, she lures young men to dance with her, which according to her mood can be a very good or very bad thing for the man.

Offerings for Vila consist of round cakes, ribbons, fresh fruits, and vegetables or flowers left at sacred sites (a certain mound, a ring of trees in the mountains, or even a hill that lightning strikes multiple times).

The Damselfly

IMG_6268 copyAnd so begins my fifth year of photographing the enchanted and most endearing little women of the McDonald family… I chose to start this year with the Damselfly as it represents the magical sense of self that comes when we enter womanhood… I also love the lore, they are of the family that the dragonfly belongs to, Odonata, which are believed to have been related to the Damselflies and the myth that the they were once Dragons.

Tulip…

A famous legend from Turkish lore tells of a handsome prince named Farhad who was stricken with love for the fair maid, Shirin. One day he heard that she had been killed, and in his grief, mounted his favorite horse and galloped over a cliff to his death. It is said that from each droplet of his blood, a scarlet tulip sprang up, making the flower an historic symbol of perfect love. Photography by Anastasia Traina ~ 1015 ~

Twas the Night Before Christmas with a Twist!

Watercolor and adaptation by Anastasia Traina ~ 2013~

Watercolor and adaptation by Anastasia Traina ~ 2013~

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the forest
Not a creature was stirring, not even a little tourist.
The old bitter-sweets were hung on the birches with care,
In hopes that Mr. Bertram B. Sweets would soon be there.

The Elfin-children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Mr. B. B. Sweets danced in their heads.
Why you know who he is, he’s the greatest, the expansive Acorn Keeper.
Not to be confused with the very grim reaper.

When out on the pond there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bough to see what was the matter.
Away to the Oak branch I flew like a flash,
Tore open the bark and threw up the downy ash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to woodland below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature Souris de Fleur, bringing lots of good cheer.

With a little odd smile, all peppered with joy and peace,
I knew in a moment it must be Mr. Bertram B. Sweets.

He was dressed all in red, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with compost and soot.
A bundle of fertilizer he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! His dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And tucked all the flowers in, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up in the sky he rose!

He sprang to his pea pod, and then gave a whistle,
And away he flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good winter’s night!”

Here is wishing you Joy, Good Health, and may all your dreams come true in 2014!

Love,
Ana
