And so begins my fifth year of photographing the enchanted and most endearing little women of the McDonald family… I chose to start this year with the Damselfly as it represents the magical sense of self that comes when we enter womanhood… I also love the lore, they are of the family that the dragonfly belongs to, Odonata, which are believed to have been related to the Damselflies and the myth that the they were once Dragons.

A famous legend from Turkish lore tells of a handsome prince named Farhad who was stricken with love for the fair maid, Shirin. One day he heard that she had been killed, and in his grief, mounted his favorite horse and galloped over a cliff to his death. It is said that from each droplet of his blood, a scarlet tulip sprang up, a symbol of perfect love.

PSYCHE (Psuchê), that is, “breath” or “the soul,”… She was once a mortal princess whose astounding beauty earned the ire of Aphrodite when men turned their worship from goddess to girl.

Dearest MayMay spinning Spring,
See how she loves all the living things.
She spins the sky such a marvelous French blue,
Yes, I have heard it said, and I believe it’s true.
With each spin that is spun, a fairy’s wish she hath done!

Hushedly, the Witching Belle chimed near the great castle of Belvedere,
Whispering her enchanted warning on the October wind, far and near~
Sounding out to all the little children, “ Please don’t pluck the plant people, my dears.”
Lest, double, double toil and trouble, sliver’d in the moon’s eclipse you shall all disappear!

The morning’s light climbed with such a particular hue that
No rose-colored glasses were necessary that day.
In the afternoon the whooshing sound of the blackbirds echoed
a sweet song of comfort as they leafed in unison from one golden birch,
to the next…
And in the pine scented evening, with only ghosts to keep one company
a shower of ladybugs was a most unexpected elation!
