The Little Merrow…

the littlest mermaidWho lost her Magical Cap!  Merrows wear a special hat called a cohuleen druith, which enables them to dive beneath the waves. If they lose this cap, it is said that they will lose their power to return beneath the water.  Also, a Merrow music is known to be heard coming from the farthest depths of the ocean, yet the sound travels floatingly across the surface.  Merrows dance to the music, whether ashore on the strand or upon the wave.

Titania’s Littlest Fay…

the sleeping faerieIs all tuckered out after her most busy day

Over hill, over dale,
Thorough bush, thorough brier,
Over park, over pale,
Thorough flood, thorough fire,
I did wander everywhere,
Swifter than the moon’s sphere;
And I serve the fairy queen,
To dew her orbs upon the green.
The cowslips tall her pensioners be:
In their gold coats spots you see;
Those be rubies, fairy favours,
In those freckles live their savours:
I must go seek some dewdrops here
And hang a pearl in every cowslip’s ear.
Farewell, thou lob of spirits; I’ll be gone:
Our queen and all our elves come here anon.

Ruby’s Metamorphosis

IMG_6897I have had the great privilege to be able to photograph the magical McDonald Sisters for the last five years…  and when I look over the photographs we have taken (a mere fraction of which I have posted) their metamorphosis into womanhood has been nothing short of astonishingly miraculous…  breathtaking, really.  And perhaps, when I began this project I did not truly understand the scope, or how tremendously moving it would be for me, the grandness of witnessing each of these tender buds, blossom into such beautifully unique flowers.  For in this photograph of Ruby, the youngest, it has become crystal clear to me that she is shedding her little red childhood cloak and bravely moving forward into the forest of the future and what ever may come her way… So I just want to humbly say, thank you for all the light and ticklish wonderment you have shared with me.  No, this is not the end, but nearly, and I wanted to leave you with my one wish for all of you, expressed so wondrously by  Maya Angelou, in  a letter she wrote to her daughter ~

“I am convinced that most people do not grow up…We marry and dare to have children and call that growing up. I think what we do is mostly grow old. We carry accumulation of years in our bodies, and on our faces, but generally our real selves, the children inside, are innocent and shy as magnolias.”

With much love and muchiness, I thank you!

oxox,

Ana

Vila

tully 2

A woodland spirit who lives in the wilderness and sometimes in the clouds. She usually appear as a beautiful maiden, naked or dressed in a sparkling green skirts of leaves…

Vila’s voice is  beautiful as the rest of her, she can form large gusts of winds that can lift houses into the air. She has healing and prophetic powers and she is sometimes willing to help human beings. At other times, she lures young men to dance with her, which according to her mood can be a very good or very bad thing for the man.

Offerings for Vila consist of round cakes, ribbons, fresh fruits, and vegetables or flowers left at sacred sites (a certain mound, a ring of trees in the mountains, or even a hill that lightning strikes multiple times).

The Damselfly

IMG_6268 copyAnd so begins my fifth year of photographing the enchanted and most endearing little women of the McDonald family… I chose to start this year with the Damselfly as it represents the magical sense of self that comes when we enter womanhood… I also love the lore, they are of the family that the dragonfly belongs to, Odonata, which are believed to have been related to the Damselflies and the myth that the they were once Dragons.

Foss Grim…

Foss Grim ~ Found in Germanic Lore, the name Foss Grim means “river horse” in Old Norse. The Foss Grim is a water spirit, with the body of a man and not that of a merman. He is said to be strikingly handsome, seen near rivers and bodies or water, barely clothed, and playing haunting music from his violin. His music would lure Women and Children into his watery home and their final resting place. However, it is believed that if properly approached, the Foss Grim will teach a musician to play so adeptly “that the trees dance and waterfalls stop at his music” Underwaterphotography by Anastasia Traina ~ 2015~

Pyramus and Thisbe!

A very touching love story that is sure to move anyone who reads it is that of Pyramus and Thisbe. Theirs was a selfless love and they made sure that even in death, they were together. Pyramus was the most handsome man and was childhood friend of Thisbe, the fairest maiden in Babylonia. They both lived in neighboring homes and fell in love with each other as they grew up together. However, their parents were dead against them marrying each other. So one night just before the crack of dawn, while everyone was asleep, they decided to slip out of their homes and meet in the nearby fields near a mulberry tree. Thisbe reached there first. As she waited under the tree, she saw a lion coming near the spring close by to quench its thirst. Its jaws were bloody. When Thisbe saw this horrifying sight, she panicked and ran to hide in some hollow rocks nearby. As she was running, she dropped her veil. The lion came near and picked up the veil in his bloody jaws. At that moment, Pyramus reaches near the mulberry tree and sees Thisbe's veil in the jaws of the lion. He is completely devastated. Shattered, he pierces his chest with his own sword. Unknown to what just happened, Thisbe is still hiding in the rocks due to the fear of the lion. When she comes out after sometime, she sees what her lover did to himself. She is totally shattered when she sees the sword piercing right through her lover's chest. She also takes the sword and kills herself. Underwater Photography by Anastasia Traina ~2015~
