Merman Oannes

sam 2SAMMY GEORGES, Artist, My Mentor Extraordinaire and Photographer as Oannes… Oannes was the name given by the Babylonian writer Berossus in the 3rd century BC to a mythical being who taught mankind wisdom. Berossus describes Oannes as having the body of a fish but underneath the figure of a man. He is described as dwelling in the Persian Gulf, and rising out of the waters in the daytime and furnishing mankind instruction in writing, the arts and the various sciences.

Ruby’s Metamorphosis

IMG_6897I have had the great privilege to be able to photograph the magical McDonald Sisters for the last five years…  and when I look over the photographs we have taken (a mere fraction of which I have posted) their metamorphosis into womanhood has been nothing short of astonishingly miraculous…  breathtaking, really.  And perhaps, when I began this project I did not truly understand the scope, or how tremendously moving it would be for me, the grandness of witnessing each of these tender buds, blossom into such beautifully unique flowers.  For in this photograph of Ruby, the youngest, it has become crystal clear to me that she is shedding her little red childhood cloak and bravely moving forward into the forest of the future and what ever may come her way… So I just want to humbly say, thank you for all the light and ticklish wonderment you have shared with me.  No, this is not the end, but nearly, and I wanted to leave you with my one wish for all of you, expressed so wondrously by  Maya Angelou, in  a letter she wrote to her daughter ~

“I am convinced that most people do not grow up…We marry and dare to have children and call that growing up. I think what we do is mostly grow old. We carry accumulation of years in our bodies, and on our faces, but generally our real selves, the children inside, are innocent and shy as magnolias.”

With much love and muchiness, I thank you!

oxox,

Ana

Vila

tully 2

A woodland spirit who lives in the wilderness and sometimes in the clouds. She usually appear as a beautiful maiden, naked or dressed in a sparkling green skirts of leaves…

Vila’s voice is  beautiful as the rest of her, she can form large gusts of winds that can lift houses into the air. She has healing and prophetic powers and she is sometimes willing to help human beings. At other times, she lures young men to dance with her, which according to her mood can be a very good or very bad thing for the man.

Offerings for Vila consist of round cakes, ribbons, fresh fruits, and vegetables or flowers left at sacred sites (a certain mound, a ring of trees in the mountains, or even a hill that lightning strikes multiple times).

The Damselfly

IMG_6268 copyAnd so begins my fifth year of photographing the enchanted and most endearing little women of the McDonald family… I chose to start this year with the Damselfly as it represents the magical sense of self that comes when we enter womanhood… I also love the lore, they are of the family that the dragonfly belongs to, Odonata, which are believed to have been related to the Damselflies and the myth that the they were once Dragons.

But I am just too excited to wait and share “may we always sit in awe of others’ differings”. Watching this idea come to life after discovering and being inspired by the tiny family of mice that moved into our empty beehive in October is simply magical. I am so thrilled to report that the lilliputian family is still well and thriving all nestled in their bed of twigs and leaves with a very healthy stash of acorns in their bee-utiful new home!
